Environment and Humans

Feet of a Tree

The legs of a human are the trunks of trees. We are grounded in reality and our planet. We start as nature and we end as such. The trunks of trees being displayed on human feet shows that connection, that one day we will be apart of the earth again. Whether it is through spirit, or buried in the ground. The vulnerability of being barefoot, being able to trust the earth and the nature around us to be a safe space. The legs grounding us to ourselves and that spirit. The relationship we have to the resources of the earth.

Nature in the Calm

This peace and tranquillity we feel on a sunny breezy day, or the sadness in a storm is not a coincidence. We begin our journey in life as cells, as something our natural world creates. We end in the ground, being given back to the earth that gave birth to us. The subject’s peaceful face with flowers, the bright white but ghostly appearance. The tattoo of his deceased father can be seen on his heart, his dad’s ashes in the ink. This encapsulates that relationship, that no matter what we all become a form of dust, earthly material.

Death or Birth

The final stage of our lives ends in decomposition. We end this journey having lived our whole lives on the planet, using its resources, energy, and spirit. The flowers on the subject were all photographs taken in my grandmothers home. The orchids and other small flowers are to remember my aunt who had passed. Human beings often correlate the dead to things that are living. Whether it be a specific bird species, a song, a flower, or even something they once owned. The calmness of the subject shows that emotion humans feel when seeing those reminders. He is ending his life, but those reminders are scattered all on him.
